Unlock PDF

Remove password protection from PDFs you own. Your password and document never leave your browser — decryption is fully local.

How to unlock a PDF

Three clicks from a protected file to a freely shareable document — when you have the password.

  1. 1

    Drop your protected PDF

Drag and drop the password-protected PDF into the dropzone. The file is read locally — there's no upload to a server.

  2. 2

    Enter the password

Type the password you set on the document. Editryk only uses it locally to decrypt the file in your browser; it's never transmitted or logged.

  3. 3

    Download the unlocked PDF

Hit Unlock. The decrypted PDF generates locally and downloads instantly. The original protected file on disk is untouched.

Who uses an online PDF unlocker?

Document owners remove an old password from a PDF you set up years ago when you need to share it with someone new.

Lawyers and legal teams unlock client-provided documents (with permission) for review, editing, and inclusion in case files.

Accountants decrypt password-protected statements and tax documents for internal processing once the client has shared the password.

HR teams unlock encrypted onboarding documents new hires send back, so they can be filed in the HRIS.

IT and ops teams remove protection from internal documents whose original creator has left, when the password is documented.

Anyone re-encrypting unlock with the old password, then re-protect with a new one using the Protect PDF tool — useful when sharing with a new audience.

Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing before you unlock your first PDF.

How do I remove a password from a PDF?

Drop your protected PDF in, type the password you set, click Unlock. The decrypted PDF downloads in seconds. You must know the password — Editryk does not crack passwords.

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

No. Editryk decrypts using the password you provide; it does not break, brute-force, or recover passwords. If you've forgotten the password to a document you own, password recovery requires specialized desktop tools and may take significant time.

Are my password and PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Both the password and the document stay entirely in your browser. Editryk decrypts locally — nothing is sent over the network, logged, or stored.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

It's legal to unlock PDFs you own or have permission to modify. Removing protection from documents you don't own — for example, a textbook you didn't purchase or someone else's confidential file — may violate copyright or computer access laws in your jurisdiction. Always make sure you have the right to unlock the document first.

What kind of PDF protection can be removed?

User passwords (password to open the file) — yes, with the correct password. Owner passwords (password to edit / print / copy text) — yes, when permission is granted. AES-128 and AES-256 encrypted PDFs are both supported.

Will the unlocked PDF look identical to the original?

Yes. Decryption only removes the encryption layer. Pages, text, fonts, hyperlinks, form fields, and bookmarks are all preserved exactly.

Can I re-protect the PDF afterward?

Yes. Use the Protect PDF tool to add a fresh AES-256 password. You can use a different password than the original if you need to share with someone new.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed cap. PDFs of any reasonable size unlock successfully. The practical ceiling is your browser's RAM.
